Why do filmmakers cast troubled actors in their films?

When filmmakers cast an actor/actress with destructive behaviors and habits, what is really on their minds?

  • “Let’s give him/her a second chance and do something positive about his/her career.”
  •  “Let’s hope he/she ODs and drops dead on the sets. That would bring lot of free publicity to the film.”

If Option No 2 doesn’t happen, what is the state of mind of the filmmaker?

  •     Happy?
  •  Disappointed?
  •  Thoroughly irritated at the thought of all the money that has to be spent on publicizing the film?
