The big letdowns of 2012 in Tamil

It is always more interesting to compose the list of worst films than the ones that made a good watch. Here are five Tamil films that were released in 2012 2 which simply failed to justify the hype that surrounded it. Maybe it was the publicity that led to its downfall.

5.    ‘3’ – When the Kolaveri song became a raging hit, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the film would flop. The question was a mere how colossally. It all began when the Kolaveri song surfaced on the internet. Honestly, even the claim that someone else had leaked the song online was attributed to publicity stunt. But, yes, the song was catchy. The lyrics held your attention even if it was merely out of curiosity. When the film finally arrived, everybody went to see how the song was picturised. Now when I try to recollect it, I can’t remember the visuals. Ewww…

Killing Dhanush so early in the film was a very, very bad idea. Having to watch Shruti trying to act as an innocent school girl - that was a torture too. She looks young enough, but is just not convincing in those segments.

More than the song, I loved the “it’s a medical miracle” line.

4.       ‘Billa 2’ – Why on earth cant Ajith’s films have good songs with nice lyrics? Or a taut screenplay. Or, actors who stop acting only AFTER the director calls a cut.

‘Billa 2’, the prequel of ‘Billa’ was a very ambitious project.

Friends of mine in the film industry always tell me that Ajith works mostly in films that his friends make and that’s why he thinks it is impolite to point out the flaws in the script. Everybody loves Ajith and so many idolize him. Therefore it is in a way his duty to give his fans films that they would love to watch over and over again.

Some of the dialogues in the films reeked of over-smartness. The songs were simply terrible. The chemistry with the heroine was non-existent.

3.       ‘Thandavam’ – Whenever I watch Vikram’s films, I have this nagging doubt that something had happened to his health post ‘Anniyan’. The playful charm that bubbled on the screen before it had completely vanished. ‘Thandavam’s story was actually interesting. There was love, action and loads of sentiments, but Vikram looked very exhausted and tired throughout the film.

Seriously, it is about time he stopped playing physically/mentally challenged characters.

2.       ‘Maattrraan’ – There is something so clinically perfect about the way Suriya goes about handling his assignments. The problem with this film was the untimely release of another flick about conjoined twins. This one was a horror number inspired by a foreign film about conjoined twin sisters. Priyamani had played the lead role.

Suriya went about playing the role of conjoined twins with his usual clinical perfection. All his expressions were more than perfect. So were his mannerisms. Kajal Agarwal – she looked good but her eyes remained vacant. You can’t see any thoughts or emotions flicker by in them.

The film reminded a lot of ‘7-aam Arivu’ which started brilliantly but then got paralyzed.

1.       ‘Saguni’ – Everybody talked about the film before its release. Some big films chose to postpone their releases because they didn’t want to clash with this one. Initially all the posters carried the images of Karthi and Santhanam together. As the release date neared, Santhanam disappeared from the poster. Finally when it hit the screens, you wondered what the fuss was all about.

The hilarious fact was that Karthi’s onscreen chemistry with Radhika was much warmer than the one that he shared with the heroine (what was her name?). The story was a very ambitious one. It opened interestingly enough and then lost steam.

Maybe this was an attempt to sabotage Karthi’s career, but he is intelligent enough to survive this.
